Full Job Description

Keeping Ontario's Legislative Assembly running smoothly takes many talented people, doing many different jobs—from camera operators and committee clerks, to purchasing officers and researchers. The Office of the Assembly is dedicated to serving Ontario's Parliament.

Together, we provide non-partisan administrative and procedural services to all MPPs, as well as operational support for the daily activities of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Our success is determined by the strength and diversity of our staff and by supporting our core values: integrity, inclusiveness, collaboration and excellence.

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, located in Toronto, ON seeks Research Officers with specialized expertise and demonstrated achievement in public policy research. Specifically, we are seeking a:
  • Research Officer with a background in health, long-term care, and/or social policy (1 permanent)
  • Research Officer with a background in political science and expert knowledge of Canadian political institutions (1 twelve-month contract).

You will join the Legislative Research Branch and its multi-disciplinary team of subject area experts with academic, legal, and applied policy backgrounds. The team provides clearly communicated confidential, non-partisan information, research, and analysis to MPPs from all parties, legislative committees, and senior staff of the Assembly.

What can I expect to do in this role?

What You'll Do

You'll act with integrity to:
  • Provide subject expert research support either in a) the area of health, long-term care, and social policy, or b) political science and public administration, and generalist support in a broad range of other public policy areas to our clients
  • Author concise, thorough, well-written reports on complex public policy issues, and deliver oral briefings on a broad range of topics in a deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, tact, discretion, and sensitivity under pressure in the political environment of Ontario's Parliament

You'll support our collaboration as you:
  • Work independently and in teams with other public policy researchers and librarians to serve a client group at the heart of provincial public affairs, with frequently changing priorities and deadlines

How do I qualify?

You demonstrate excellence through your:

  • Successful completion of a postgraduate degree granted by a university in a related field, preferably in public policy, political science or public administration
  • Expert knowledge of issues related to either a) health, long-term care, and/or social policy or b) Ontario and Canadian legislative and governmental institutions and processes, and Ontario and federal politics
  • Active interest in current affairs
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in relevant research and policy analysis
  • Superior qualitative and quantitative research and analytical abilities, combined with excellent written and oral communication skills including data visualization skills
  • Experience reading and interpreting public Acts
  • Proficiency in French (would be an asset)
  • Ethos of non-partisan public service in support of good governance and healthy democracy

If you join our team, you can expect:

  • Comprehensive benefits and pension package
  • Access to an employee and family assistance program
  • A dynamic work environment
  • To work with a team of dedicated professionals
  • To be encouraged and supported to grow your career through training and development (Applicable for permanent status only)
  • Long Service Recognition Awards (Applicable for permanent status only)
