The CNE, often affectionately referred to as The Ex, is Canada’s largest community event and one of the top ten agricultural fairs in North America. Withrow Common Art Gallery

An initiative of the Canadian National Exhibition Association (CNEA), Withrow Common is an exciting community event space located at Toronto’s Exhibition Place, across from the Princess Margaret Fountain.

The 2,675 square-foot gallery lives in the west side of the Queen Elizabeth Building complex, which was constructed in 1957.

For our 2022 CNE we are pleased to present artworks by renowned Canadian artist, Charles Pachter, a legend of Canadian pop-art. Pachter, a contemporary painter and sculptor who has represented Canada both domestically and internationally, will provide insight on his Romance with Canada -why he chose to stay in Canada for the vast majority of his longstanding art career . The exhibition will feature many of his iconic creations that link to Canadian themes. But it will also feature the National Film Board 1947 production of Johnny at the Fair. Pachter starred as the child, Johnny, who has returned to the Fair after a prolonged series of Fair cancellations due to World War II. It covers his adventures on the grounds including becoming lost and found in the midst of the Fair. After two years of COVID cancellations, the parallel could not be more vivid.

Overview

Reporting to the Gallery Coordinator and the Program Manager, Arts & Heritage/Archives, the Gallery Attendant will be primarily responsible for ensuring a positive guest experience at Withrow Common gallery and ensuring the safety/security of the artwork while also assisting in the installation and deinstallation of the artworks and related tasks such as creating labels, pricelists, providing information, completing order forms and processing sales.

Responsibilities

Assist in the packing, pickup, delivery of artwork, installation and de-installation
With the guidance of the Gallery coordinator, assist in preparing supporting materials including labels, price lists, art descriptions, etc.
Open the exhibit gallery and ensure all feature lighting is turned on and washrooms/public spaces are clean
Monitor condition of art and complete art condition reports as necessary - report any issues to the Gallery Coordinator
Review information relevant to the exhibit
Actively look for ways to engage guests
Process sales of art as trained
Close and secure building as needed
Demonstrate and facilitate exhibit activities to guests
Provide information to guests about exhibits in an enthusiastic and informative manner
Answer questions from guests regarding the exhibits
Ensure that exhibit areas are properly maintained and presentable at all times
Identify and escalate situations requiring attention to appropriate personnel
Process ticket transactions (including cash, debit and credit card handling)
Scan and validate special event Gallery admission tickets
Ensure guests have produced appropriate ticket/pass to enter
Provide support for special events including setup, service and takedown

Required Qualifications

You are reliable, enthusiastic and have a friendly disposition. You enjoy public speaking and possess excellent communication skills. Additionally, you are able to work with minimal supervision and have good judgement.
Previous customer service or museum/gallery experience is required
Available to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends
Shifts: All days of the week: 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Shifts scheduled in accordance with special events in addition to normal Gallery hours
Breaks allocated pursuant to the Employment Standards Act
As much notice as possible will be provided, however on-call availability would be an asset to accommodate special events
Able to attend Mandatory Orientation Session

Special Conditions

Ability to remain standing or in stationary position for extended periods of time
Ability to work in environment with varying levels of lighting (in accordance with artist requirements)
